Understanding the certifications

NCCP Coach Initiation in Sport (prerequisite for all)

Free online module required before any CSI or CI clinic. Completed at thelocker.coach.ca. Takes about 30 minutes.

CSI Community Sport Initiation

For FUN2, FUN3, U12. For coaches entering ringette and developmental divisions. Approximately 10 hours including on-ice instruction. Register at coachingringette.ca.

CI Competition Introduction

For U14, U16, U19. Coaches with at least three seasons of experience. Trained (clinic) is the minimum at B level. Requires a pre-clinic workbook. Register at coachingringette.ca.

MED Make Ethical Decisions

Required at U12 and up. 4-hour live training plus online evaluation at thelocker.coach.ca. The evaluation alone without the clinic does not count.

Respect in Sport / CAC Safe Sport

All bench staff must complete one of these two. Respect in Sport (Activity Leader) at respectgroupinc.com. CAC Safe Sport through the Coaching Association of Canada. Either satisfies the requirement.

Female coach on the bench

All teams from U8 through U19 must have at least one fully qualified female coach (18 or older) on the bench for all team activities. Must be a Head Coach or Assistant Coach with appropriate certification. Trainers, Junior Coaches, and On-Ice Assistants do not satisfy this requirement. Open and Masters divisions are exempt. Required by November 30, 2026.

Vulnerable Sector Check

All bench staff must have a current 2026 VSC on file before the season begins. Must be renewed each season.

Where to get it: Your local police service or OPP detachment. Apply online where available.
Where to submit: Email to coaching@nfringette.ca or deliver to the registrar at the start of the season.
Important: A check from a previous year will not be accepted. Do not submit your VSC through RAMP.

First Aid Certification (Trainers)

All team trainers must hold current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification valid for 2026-2027. It is strongly recommended the trainer be present at all team activities, not just games. Training is available through the Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, and other accredited providers in Niagara.

Junior Coaches

U16 and younger teams may include up to two Junior Coaches (aged 14-17 as of December 31) on the bench, provided total bench staff does not exceed five.
  • Must have appropriate certification for the team's level before commencing
  • Cannot fill the female coach on the bench requirement
  • Not permitted on U19 or 18+ teams

On-Ice Assistants

On-Ice Assistants help during practice only. Not bench staff, not on the TRF or bench during games. Must register with Ringette Ontario and be qualified before stepping on the ice. CSA-approved helmet required.
  • Vulnerable Sector Check required
  • Appropriate certification for the division required prior to commencing
  • Club players assisting on ice (not Junior Coaches) do not need dual registration

Team Manager

Managers are not permitted on the bench during sanctioned events. The manager role is entirely off-ice.
The manager handles off-ice logistics: communications, volunteers, scheduling, finances, and liaison with leagues and tournaments.

Ringette Canada Manager Certification: Online course at coachingringette.ca for $25. Wallet card issued on completion. Required by November 30, 2026.
Vulnerable Sector Check: 2026 check required before the season begins.
Respect in Sport / CAC Safe Sport: Required for all team staff including managers.
